Defendify Volunteers to Maintain Wildlife Habitat at the United Way Day of Action

Defendify loves to volunteer in the community, and jumped at the opportunity to participate in the United Way Day of Action: an annual day of service sponsored by United Way of Greater Portland, Maine, held this year on May 16th. Defendify spent the morning on a different kind of “hacking:” removing invasive plants that have grown rampant in the habitat. The group uprooted and cut vines and honeysuckle plants that were choking out other native species. It was tough work, but a great bonding opportunity for the team and a nice chance to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

Eliminating these invasive plants helps to encourage native plants to grow into a healthy shrubland habitat, in hopes that it will one day provide a suitable home for the New England Cottontail. This rare rabbit is found only in select parts of New England and New York – less than a fifth of its original range – due to loss of habitat. The rabbit is known to live in a nearby area that is similar, but free of invasive plants, so the goal of this project was to expand the usable habitat to give them room to live.

The United Way Day of Action was a great opportunity to get involved with others in the local community. More than 1,000 volunteers from local businesses and schools spent the day enhancing the thriving community at 75+ projects with local nonprofits and schools. In addition to Defendify’s plant removal, other projects completed by volunteers included painting, trail clearing, gardening, cleaning and organizing, reading with children, and more. Day of Action projects were held at many agencies, schools, parks, and municipal sites throughout the Greater Portland area.
