Defendify is proud to announce their support of Computer Science for Maine (CS4ME) as a business member. They join local and national organizations in an effort to ensure that computer science is a subject area offered to all Maine K-12 students.
CS4Maine believes that all Maine students, including those who have traditionally been underrepresented, should have access to computer science education – but it’s not available at all Maine schools. In addition, Maine is one of eight states that does not count computer science classes towards graduation requirements. Given that computing jobs are the number one source of all new wages in the U.S., the coalition believes that students in Maine need equal access to quality computer science courses and education as students nationwide.
Launched in December 2018, CS4ME has already begun advocating for increased computer science education statewide. The coalition will work to move Maine towards the following objectives:
- Fund computer science professional development for teachers
- Offer computer science in all high schools by 2022
- Offer computer science learning opportunities in all grade levels by 2025
- Allow computer science courses to count toward high school graduation requirements across the state
- Determine and implement appropriate K-12 computer science standards
The Defendify team has deep roots throughout the state of Maine and feels strongly about supporting the success of young people in our local area and nationwide. Cybersecurity is a booming field with an astonishing 0% unemployment rate, and the options for careers are vast – not to mention well-paying. The availability of computer science education is a key component in getting students interested in and prepared for a career in cybersecurity and other technology fields.

The Computer Science for Maine (CS4Maine) Coalition was launched in December of 2018 to ensure Maine students have access to high quality computer science education. The primary goal of the Coalition is to ensure computer science is a subject area offered to all Maine K-12 students. Twenty-eight employers, 11 education organizations, 8 schools and universities, 9 libraries, and 5 chambers of commerce support the goal and objectives of the Coalition. Only 30% of Maine K-12 schools offer any computer science classes. As a result of the inequity of offerings statewide, many Maine students are missing out on foundational computer science education. Coalition members will be engaged in advocacy efforts, supporting student and teacher programs, and will be connected to schools in their local communities to expand computer science education.
