As Goes the Leader, So Goes the Company

One of the holy grails for business leaders is being recognized as running a company with an amazing culture. When team members become raging fans, it drives productivity, creativity, and an energy that is seemingly unstoppable. Employees not only become promoters of the brand but defenders of the enterprise.

Culture is a very powerful thing and one of the most important aspects of cybersecurity.

A recent CIO magazine article, Cyber Responsibility, the Trickle-down Effect, tackles this head on:

“Security is a frame of mind, one that is reached through practice. Just as parents buckle up every time they get in the car, executives and board members need to model their security habits for everyone in the organization.”

Instilling that mindset starts at the top and brings about a whole new conversation for today’s business leaders. Cybersecurity is making its way into everything, it can no longer be just another to-do on IT’s long list of headaches to deal with. It’s becoming a bit of a cliché, but the reality is, this is a conversation for the board room, not the server room. The article adds, “There was a time when cyber security was the sole responsibility of IT, but those days are long gone.”

Why? Technology is just the tip of the iceberg. Alone, it fails to address the human factor.

For example, phishing emails still manage to get through, even at large enterprises with the best spam filtering technology. All it takes is one bad click.

A successful cybersecurity program should incorporate multiple layers of protection, including Culture which starts at the top of the food chain, often with the CEO.

A great business culture can go a long way and building a culture of strong cybersecurity can do the same. By making cybersecurity a core function of your business you can take people from being the weakest links to the strongest defenders.

As a business leader, you can make all the difference in the world, especially in protecting your organization. Stephen Covey puts it best, “What you do has far greater impact than what you say.”
